Swim Meet 101

SWIM MEETS

Meets begin at 6:15pm. Swimmers need to be at the pool by 5pm for home meets and 5:30pm for away meets.

At a home meet, warm ups begin at 5:30pm.

At an away meet, warm ups begin at 5:50pm.

What to bring to the meet:

Swimsuit, towels, a set of dry clothes and/or warm clothes for between events; if available, extra cap and goggles in case they break; blanket and/or folding chairs, cash for concession, snacks, drinks, entertainment (cards, games, iPad, etc.) Please label all of your belongings.

When you arrive at the meet:

1. Report to the coaches area to check in with a coach

2. Get your events paper from a coach

3. Use a Sharpie to write the following info on swimmers forearm (Event, Heat, Lane, Stroke ... See picture below)

4. Sit in the team area (look for our team banner) during the meet

BASIC SWIMMING TERMS TO KNOW

Strokes – freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke

Event – individual or relay races of freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke

Heat – multiple races within the same event organized by age group

Medley – race consisting of all four strokes

Individual Medley order: Butterfly-Back-Breast-Free

Medley Relay order: Back-Breast-Fly-Free

WEATHER POLICIES

Inclement weather is inevitable during our swim season. Dual meets will not be canceled before 6:15pm. In the event lightning and / or thunder occur in the vicinity of the host pool, a 20 minute delay (or the standard delay of the host pool) is required. The aggregate amount of delays should not exceed one hour for any one meet. SSA Representative(s) and coaches and / or club representatives shall determine whether a meet should be canceled or suspended.
